OPT job search checklist (data-driven)

Use real filing history to quickly shortlist likely sponsors and avoid spending weeks on low-probability leads.

Start from a role (Job Title)
Go to H1B Jobs and search your role (e.g., “Software Engineer”). Open the job profile and note:
  • How many companies filed for this role
  • Median salary and salary spread
  • Top locations where filings cluster
Constrain by your city/state (Location)
If you can’t relocate, use H1B Locations. Open your city page and look at top companies + common job titles.
This is a fast way to find realistic sponsors near you.
Validate the employer (Company)
Open a company profile and check:
  • Volume over time (are they actively filing recently?)
  • Decision mix (certified/denied/withdrawn patterns)
  • Salary medians for your role
  • Multiple worksites vs one location (relevant for your preference)
Use PERM as a “green-card intent” signal
If you care about long-term stability, cross-check the same employer on PERM Companies. PERM filings can be a signal of green-card sponsorship behavior (not a guarantee).

Note: H1B pages reflect DOL LCA filings (hiring intent / wage commitments), not USCIS petition outcomes for a specific person. Use this as research, then confirm sponsorship with the employer.
